Kuwait Ranks Fifth Globally in Per Capita Energy Consumption

Kuwait ranked fifth globally in terms of total per capita energy consumption in 2025, according to the latest data from the 2026 Statistical Review of World Energy, published by the Energy Institute. The ranking was led by Iceland, Qatar, and Singapore.
Kuwait’s and the broader Gulf region’s top positions on the list of countries with the highest per capita energy consumption reflect the substantial industrial and petroleum weight these nations possess.
Kuwait and Gulf countries stand out clearly in this ranking, as the high per capita energy consumption in the region is linked to the presence of large-scale oil and gas production sectors and related industries, alongside high domestic energy demand.
The data revealed a significant disparity in energy consumption levels between major economies with high levels of manufacturing and consumption, and countries with high population density and developing nations, particularly between the United States and India.
2025 data indicate that high per capita energy consumption cannot simply be interpreted as an indicator of the population’s standard of living or the volume of direct personal consumption. The indicator is influenced by a wide range of economic and production factors, including the size of the industrial base, economic structure, oil and gas production, refining and processing operations, energy-intensive industries, available energy sources, and the volume of demand for them.
According to the 2026 Statistical Review of World Energy, the top seven countries globally in terms of total per capita energy consumption in 2025 were as follows:
Iceland topped the ranking with a rate of 744.9 gigajoules per capita in 2025. Nearly all of the country’s electricity supply comes from hydropower and geothermal energy sources, while energy-intensive industries, including aluminum smelting, contribute to raising total energy demand.
Qatar ranked second globally, with a total consumption of 717.3 gigajoules per capita. The country’s massive natural gas sector is one of the key factors behind this high level, as Qatar produces large quantities of natural gas, liquefies them, and exports them on a wide scale, despite having a relatively small population compared to the size of its energy sector.
Singapore ranked third, with 627.8 gigajoules per capita. The city-state combines a small population with an energy-intensive industrial sector, alongside large-scale oil refining facilities and petrochemical industries, which raise total energy consumption relative to its population size.
The UAE ranked fourth globally, with a total consumption of 463.2 gigajoules per capita. This high level reflects the nature of its energy-intensive economy, along with the significant role of the oil and gas sector and related industries, as well as a relatively limited population compared to the scale of economic activity and energy production.
Kuwait ranked fifth globally, recording 377.5 gigajoules of per capita energy consumption. This high level comes amid the prominent position of the oil and gas sector in the Kuwaiti economy, alongside high domestic demand for energy.
This result places Kuwait among a limited group of countries recording the highest levels of per capita energy consumption globally, alongside several Gulf states and nations whose economies are closely tied to energy production and energy-intensive industries.
Trinidad and Tobago ranks sixth, with total consumption of 358.2 gigajoules per capita. The country is among small economies where energy production and processing play a significant role, which is reflected in its per capita energy consumption levels.
Saudi Arabia closed out the top seven, recording 347.9 gigajoules per capita. The United States ranked tenth globally, with total per capita energy consumption in 2025 reaching 270.2 gigajoules, trailing Canada, which recorded 300.4 gigajoules per capita.
Although the United States ranks below several countries in per capita energy consumption, the gap between it and India remains extremely large, with per capita consumption in the US being approximately ten times that of India. Conversely, India records a much lower level, totaling 27 gigajoules per capita in 2025, placing it outside the top 40 countries globally.
Although India is one of the world’s largest economies and most populous countries, its energy needs are distributed across a massive population base, resulting in lower per capita consumption compared to smaller economies with higher energy intensity.
Furthermore, India’s low per capita energy consumption reflects differences in economic structure, industrialization levels, and energy use compared to advanced economies, alongside significant disparities in transportation patterns, consumption habits, income levels, and energy infrastructure.
