Ten-Year-Old Invents an 'Electronic Nose'!

A young Taiwanese inventor named Hsu Ting-wei, who is only ten years old, caused a stir at the International Silicon Valley Inventors Festival in California, USA, after winning the grand prize of the event alongside 24 gold medals and other special awards.
Hsu, a student at Kang Chiao International School, secured the gold medal and the Best Invention award from the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations for his creation, dubbed the “Innovative Artificial Electronic Nose.” This award is one of the most prestigious in the world of invention, given annually to projects that demonstrate exceptional creativity and high practical value.
Hsu’s invention is a smart, non-contact security screening platform that detects hazardous materials. It integrates an instant air sampling system, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry device, and artificial intelligence-based odor recognition technology. The device is designed to be installed behind X-ray baggage scanners at airports, adding a layer of chemical detection to traditional visual screening. The significance of this invention lies in its ability to identify hazardous substances that are not clearly visible in X-ray images, such as certain explosives, narcotics, and prohibited chemicals.
Presenting his vision for the application of his invention, the young inventor said he hopes his device will help prevent the entry of pork products that may carry African Swine Fever into countries, as well as assist US authorities in intercepting drugs like fentanyl at the border. African Swine Fever is a severe viral disease that affects pigs and has caused significant economic losses in many countries, making early cross-border detection crucial.
Amin Ghaffouripour, the head of the judging committee, praised Hsu’s invention, emphasizing that the award was not given merely to encourage his young age, but as a genuine recognition by the committee of the invention’s practical value and the strong impression made by the quality of his work. He added that the device has immense commercial potential and may soon find its way into airports, border crossings, and critical facilities.
The festival, which saw participation from more than 30 countries in both general and youth inventor categories, featured a notable Taiwanese presence.
