Public Works Projects Lay the Foundation for Food Security Infrastructure

- The Ministry awaits regulatory approvals to begin implementing the treated water systems in the Northern and Southern regions.

- The projects aim to boost local production and reduce reliance on imports.

The Ministry of Public Works is advancing its plans to strengthen Kuwait’s food security system, in line with the state’s directives in this regard. The Ministry is taking rapid steps to prepare the necessary infrastructure for food security projects through a package of tenders and initiatives aimed at developing agricultural areas and improving supply chain efficiency, thereby enhancing local production and reducing dependence on importing products that can be grown in Kuwait.

The Ministry laid the cornerstone for the implementation phase of the food security system after launching tenders for the development, construction, completion, operation, and maintenance of the treated water systems in the Northern and Southern regions (Abdali and Al-Wafra) on March 22 to bolster the food security framework. The bids for these two tenders have now been opened, with 13 companies competing to execute them: six companies for the Southern region and seven for the Northern region.

The study committee at the Ministry of Public Works is currently reviewing the bids submitted by competing companies to submit its recommendation to the Central Tenders Committee regarding the most suitable bid technically and financially, to complete the remaining approvals required to sign contracts with the winners.

Kuwait’s food security system is a comprehensive national strategy based on treating wastewater, agriculture, storage, and other logistical services and matters.

Officials in the Ministry of Public Works consider the treated water systems projects in the North and South as the cornerstone for transforming this strategy into practical reality.

They confirmed that the Ministry will commence implementation of the two projects immediately upon obtaining approvals from regulatory authorities and signing contracts with winning contractors, to prepare the necessary infrastructure for completing and finalizing the food security system, which is considered one of the fundamental pillars of the state’s strategy in the coming years.

They pointed out that developing logistical infrastructure directly contributes to reducing losses of agricultural products and improving distribution efficiency, which positively impacts prices and market stability. They explained that this step represents a practical translation of the state’s plans aimed at enhancing self-sufficiency and developing the agricultural sector.

1 - Supporting food security: Providing stable and sustainable water supplies to enhance local production and achieve higher levels of agricultural self-sufficiency.

2 - Alleviating pressure on freshwater: Reducing reliance on freshwater and desalinated water for non-potable uses.
