Anti-inflammatory Fruits... Boost Gut Health

Vogue highlighted fruits rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, which help support gut health and enhance the gut microbiome—the delicate ecosystem of beneficial bacteria living in the digestive tract that plays a pivotal role in overall health.

The introduction, reviewed by Howard E. LeWine, chief medical editor at Harvard Health Publishing, noted that consuming between one and a half to two cups of a variety of fruits daily can boost antioxidant activity, protecting the body from heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Nutrition expert Laura Barada, author of “What Makes Us Eat the Way We Do?” (published by Columbia University Press), commented on the recommendations, stating that Harvard’s advice is well-supported by current scientific evidence. She described it as a valuable recommendation because it is accessible to everyone and does not require drastic changes to one’s lifestyle. Barada added that while general guidelines hold immense value from a public health perspective, science allows for two important clarifications that should be considered to understand the mechanisms underlying these benefits.

The six recommended fruits include all types of berries, strawberries, oranges, grapes, cherries, and pomegranates. All are rich in antioxidants and plant compounds that support gut health and reduce inflammation at the cellular level.
