Spain floods kill two women and injure two children

AFP – Floods and a landslide triggered by heavy rains in northwestern Spain have killed two women and injured two children, authorities said on Saturday.

Emergency services in the Castile and León region reported that “the deaths of two women, one aged around 60 and the other around 80, have been confirmed” following the disaster in the small village of Mantanedo de Valdiviesa.

They added that two infants received treatment for bruises, and a third person, an elderly man in his eighties who had been reported missing, “was found safe.”

Marco Morala, mayor of the neighboring town of Ponferrada, told journalists that “severe storms in the hills caused a torrent of rocks, mud, and debris,” resulting in fatalities.

These floods come as Spain has been grappling with extreme weather conditions for weeks, including heatwaves and forest fires.
