Brighton extends Gomez's contract for five years

Brighton, the eighth-placed team in last season’s English Premier League, has extended the contract of Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez for five years, as announced on Friday.

Gomez, 23, who represented his national team at the World Cup in North America, joined American club Inter Miami in January 2025 and scored 11 goals in 56 appearances for Brighton.

He started in four of his country’s five matches in the recent World Cup finals before being eliminated by France in the round of 16.

Brighton’s sporting director, Mike Cawley, said in a statement: “Diego has been an important player for us since his arrival, and we are delighted to secure his long-term future with the club.”

He added: “He has adapted smoothly to the English Premier League and established himself as a key member of the squad. We believe Diego will continue his development this season and remain a vital player in helping us achieve our objectives this year and in the future.”

Brighton will open their league campaign on August 23 with an away match against Aston Villa, but they will first face Norwegian side Tromso in the Conference League playoff round on August 20.
