Instagram changes its logo and launches a new design

In a move that sparked widespread engagement across social media and technology circles, Instagram announced a comprehensive and structural overhaul of its visual identity, replacing its old analog camera icon with a new simplified logo based on flat shapes and vibrant rainbow gradient colors. This visual update extends to the platform’s affiliated apps, including Layout, Boomerang, and Hyperlapse, to unify the company’s artistic vision.
In addition to updating the external logo, the changes included a radical redesign of the app’s internal interface on both Android and iOS systems. The platform abandoned its previously contrasting internal colors in favor of a monochromatic design based on black and white. Instagram management explained that the primary purpose of making the interface simple and uncolored is to leave full visual space for the photos and videos shared by users, making them the central and most prominent visual focus within the app.
Since the app’s previous design belonged to the era of skeuomorphic design, which mimicked the physical forms of lenses and real devices, Ian Spalter, Head of Design, clarified that the development was necessary to reflect Instagram’s modern community, which shares more than 80 million photos and videos daily. Spalter noted that while the new logo retains the basic camera structure, it adds more vitality and warmth to suit continuous technological evolution.
Given the significance of this step in the evolution of digital platforms, the key objectives and changes can be highlighted as follows:
Despite initial mixed user reactions to the new colorful logo, design experts believe this move represents a necessary transition toward the future, ensuring Instagram’s continuity as a modern visual platform that keeps pace with the aspirations of millions of content creators worldwide.
