3 Minutes of Movement Reduces Risk of 13 Types of Cancer

A recent study suggests that replacing periods of sitting with movement, even for short durations, may be associated with a reduced risk of developing 13 types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, rectal, and lung cancer.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 59,000 individuals who wore devices to track their physical activity, followed their health records for approximately eight years, and found that participants who replaced part of their sitting time with standing or movement had lower cancer risks, with greater benefits observed as activity intensity increased.

According to the study’s models, three minutes of vigorous daily activity was associated with a risk reduction comparable to that linked to 90 minutes of low-intensity activity.

However, researchers emphasize that the study does not prove that movement directly prevents cancer, as it relied on observing associations. Nevertheless, the findings reinforce the importance of reducing sedentary time and incorporating short periods of movement throughout the day, underscoring that every bit of movement matters.
