Celtic part ways with De Bruyne

Sao Paulo – AFP – After several months of negotiations, the Brazilian club Corinthians announced on Tuesday that it had withdrawn, for financial reasons, from extending the contract of Dutch international Memphis Depay, which expired on July 31.

The Netherlands’ all-time top scorer sparked widespread controversy with an angry reaction, accusing the club’s management of not respecting a prior agreement that stipulated his contract would continue until 2028.

The 32-year-old forward joined “Timão” in September 2024, following a European career that included spells with PSV Eindhoven, English club Manchester United, French side Lyon, and Spanish club Atlético Madrid.

In a statement, Corinthians said: “This decision was made solely and exclusively to preserve the financial health of our institution, which requires strict balance and responsible management of available resources.”

The club is burdened by heavy debts estimated at around 420 million euros ($480 million), according to the annual report on the Brazilian football sector issued by Galapagos Capital.
