Balqis Al-Abdulrazzaq: Anime art is highly popular among children and teenagers
As part of the activities of the “Summer Cultural Festival 18,” organized by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, the Kuwait National Library hosted an artistic workshop titled “Fundamentals of Anime Drawing,” presented by trainer and artist Balqis Al-Abdulrazzaq, with the participation of a group of young participants from various age groups interested in drawing and anime.
Speaking on the occasion, Al-Abdulrazzaq said the workshop targets participants aged 9 to 16, and runs for three days, with two hours of instruction per day. She noted that the workshop focuses on teaching participants the principles and basics that help them enter the world of anime drawing correctly.
She explained that participants learned several fundamental skills in drawing anime characters during the workshop, emphasizing that the goal is not limited to imparting artistic knowledge, but also provides participants with the opportunity to apply and practice, and to discover their own drawing styles.
Regarding her own beginnings with anime art, Al-Abdulrazzaq recalled her artistic journey, explaining that her relationship with this art form began at a very early age, specifically when she was eight years old, when she found herself passionate about drawing anime characters and continuing to develop her skills in this field.
She clarified that her passion for drawing did not stop at anime; it evolved over time, leading her to try portrait drawing, before her artistic experience branched out to include various artistic fields and styles. This broadened her space for experimentation, learning, and discovering her artistic potential.
She stressed that persistence and practice were among the most important factors that helped her develop her talent, noting that an artist’s journey often begins with a simple passion, which then transforms through training and experience into skill and expertise, potentially opening up multiple artistic fields that the artist did not initially expect to explore.
Regarding teaching arts to children and youth at an early age, she said it represents an important step in building their personalities and developing their creative abilities. Drawing gives them a means to express their ideas and imagination, while also helping them develop observation, concentration, patience, and precision. She pointed out that anime art, in particular, enjoys great popularity among children and teenagers, making it a suitable entry point to introduce them to the basics of drawing in an appealing way that aligns with their interests. She emphasized that when children learn through a field they love, they are more engaged and willing to learn and experiment.
