Arteta backs Guimaraes to 'ignite a different spark' at Arsenal

Guimaraes was introduced to Arsenal fans ahead of yesterday’s 3-2 friendly defeat against German side Borussia Dortmund, following his transfer from fellow Newcastle United player in a deal worth approximately $101 million.

The 28-year-old has bolstered the Gunners’ midfield, which features a star-studded lineup including Declan Rice, Norwegian Martin Odegaard, Spaniard Mikel Merino, his compatriot Martin Zubimendi, and Iperitxi Eze.

Arteta told Arsenal’s official website after the warm reception Guimaraes received, “You can see the immediate reaction.”

He added, “I think he will motivate all the players in the squad, and that is the type of player we need.”

After finishing second for three consecutive seasons, Arsenal finally ended a 22-year title drought by winning the league last season, in addition to reaching the Champions League final and the League Cup final.

Arteta, who started captain Odegaard for the first time during the pre-season preparations after the World Cup, said, “I am disappointed by our loss in the match.”

He continued, “I think we lacked some defensive touches, especially in set-pieces and defense, where we were not at our best in terms of timing and precision.”

Arsenal will play Manchester City in the Community Shield at the end of next week, before beginning their title defense with a match against newly promoted Coventry on August 21.
