Brunei Ambassador: Kuwait is an important partner for ASEAN

Brunei Darussalam’s Ambassador to Kuwait, Haji Seline Haji Said, affirmed that Kuwait represents a vital partner for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), praising the support provided by the Kuwaiti government to enhance cooperation with ASEAN member states. He expressed hope that the momentum achieved during previous summits would be built upon to push bilateral relations into broader horizons.

In a speech delivered during a celebratory event marking the anniversary of ASEAN’s founding on Sunday at the residence of the Malaysian Ambassador, attended by Assistant Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs for Asian Affairs Nawaf Abdul Latif Sulaiman Al-Ahmad, Ambassador Said stated that “2023 marked an important milestone in the trajectory of relations between ASEAN and Kuwait, with the holding of the first summit between the two sides, which opened a new chapter in relations and joint cooperation.”

He added that the second summit between ASEAN and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries adopted the “ASEAN 2035” framework for cooperation, reflecting a collective commitment to deepening partnership in several key areas, foremost among them trade and investment, energy security, food security, digital transformation, tourism, education, and climate action.

Ambassador Said welcomed Kuwait’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, emphasizing that “this step reflects Kuwait’s commitment to the principles of peaceful cooperation and respect for international law, and underscores the depth of relations binding it to the countries of the region.” He commended the role played by the Kuwaiti government in supporting cooperation with ASEAN, stressing the importance of continuing joint efforts and enhancing coordination in upcoming engagements, thereby contributing to translating previous understandings and agreements into practical cooperation that benefits both sides.

He noted that the embassies of ASEAN countries accredited to Kuwait work closely through the committee affiliated with the Association, not only to strengthen bilateral relations with Kuwait but also to introduce the cultures of Southeast Asian nations and enhance understanding and communication between the peoples of the region and Kuwaiti society.

The Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the Kuwaiti government for providing a welcoming, hospitable, and safe environment for citizens of ASEAN countries residing in Kuwait, particularly in light of the circumstances and challenges facing the region. He said that this atmosphere, along with Kuwait’s open society and culture based on coexistence, has allowed everyone the opportunity to celebrate the founding anniversary of ASEAN with a spirit of friendship and unity.
