Forest Fire Smoke Threatens Fetuses: Study Sounds the Alarm

As several countries around the world experience an exceptional wildfire season, a new scientific study has revealed a concerning aspect of the aftermath of these disasters: the growing risk that wildfire smoke poses to fetuses during pregnancy.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland in the United States and published last Friday, showed that fetal exposure to fine particulate matter from wildfires more than doubled between 2003 and 2019, reflecting the increasing contribution of wildfire smoke to the air pollution experienced by pregnant women.

The study indicates that fine particulate matter known as PM2.5, resulting from wildfires, may be more harmful than particles from traditional pollution sources.

These particles are characterized by their small size, which allows them to penetrate deep into the lungs and then enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases, lung damage, and certain types of cancer.

Michelle Bourdage, an associate professor of health policy and management at the University of Maryland and one of the study’s authors, stated that reducing pregnant women’s exposure to these particles “means healthier children today and more productive adults in the future.”

The study noted that wildfires were responsible for more than 70% of the days when fine particulate matter levels exceeded the thresholds set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during 2017 and 2018.

Researchers believe that the success of environmental policies in reducing traditional pollution has made wildfire smoke account for a larger share of dangerous air pollution episodes, necessitating new strategies to protect the population, particularly pregnant women.

Researchers emphasized that the period between 2020 and 2025 was the most intense in terms of wildfire smoke in the United States, calling for further studies to understand the impact of smoke exposure during different stages of pregnancy.

Experts argue that the study’s findings expand the group of populations most vulnerable to air pollution, as the risk is no longer limited to those with respiratory conditions but also includes pregnant women and fetuses, amid increasing wildfires linked to climate change.
