Alcaraz withdraws from the Cincinnati tennis championship

Organizers of the Cincinnati Open tennis tournament announced on Tuesday that defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the event scheduled for this month due to a persistent wrist injury.

Alcaraz, 23, was expected to return to competition at the Masters 1000 tournament, organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), after being absent from the courts since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open in April.

Alcaraz was unable to defend his title at the French Open and also missed Wimbledon while recovering from the injury.

Cincinnati tournament director Bob Moran said in a statement, “We know that Carlos is doing everything he can to return to tournament play as soon as possible.”

World No. 2 Alcaraz won the Cincinnati title last year after world No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the final.
