Television Steals Your Brain Health: Study Warns

A U.S. study has revealed that excessive television viewing, particularly during middle age, can affect brain health over a period of up to 20 years.

Researchers from the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California confirmed that excessive TV watching leads to changes in memory-related areas and cognitive functions, potentially increasing the risk of dementia.

As part of the study, published in a specialized scientific journal on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, the research team monitored the health of approximately 1,700 adults between 1987 and 1989.

At the time, the volunteers averaged around 53 years of age. Participants recorded the hours they spent watching television as well as their work hours throughout the day.

After 20 years, MRI scans showed significant differences in the brains of those who spent long hours watching TV compared to those who never watched TV or watched it rarely.

It was found that individuals who watched TV “most of the time” experienced a reduction in the size of certain brain regions, including areas associated with memory, as well as the frontal and occipital lobes, which are linked to planning, attention, decision-making, and visual processing.

Conversely, the study showed that people who spent more hours working had larger frontal and occipital lobes. Researchers attributed this to the fact that many office jobs require sustained concentration, problem-solving skills, communication, and other forms of mental engagement.

Researcher Nathan Vetter, a member of the study team from the Dornsife College, told the science-focused website ScienceDaily: “We encourage people to avoid spending long periods sitting and to follow experts’ recommendations on how to make the best use of leisure time, as these choices have a profound impact on brain health.”
