In Adolescence

Adolescence is one of the most sensitive stages in a girl’s life; during this period, physical, psychological, and cognitive changes accelerate, and a significant portion of her personality takes shape. It is natural for certain behaviors that may cause parental concern to emerge during this stage, such as mood swings, a desire for independence, excessive concern with appearance, susceptibility to friends’ opinions, and a tendency toward privacy. These behaviors do not indicate poor upbringing; rather, they are part of normal development, provided they remain within reasonable limits.

Therefore, a mother’s success in dealing with her adolescent daughter depends on striking a balance between firmness and emotional support, respecting her feelings, avoiding sarcasm or excessive blame, granting her an appropriate degree of independence, and setting clear, consistent boundaries.

If a mother senses that her daughter has made a mistake, the first step should be to verify the facts rather than basing her response on mere suspicions or hearsay. If the mistake is confirmed, she should choose an appropriate time for dialogue and advice, without belittling or hurting her daughter. Listening and allowing the daughter to express herself are effective approaches for correcting behavior.

However, if the mistake escalates into a real danger—such as unsafe use of social media or any behavior that threatens her faith, morals, or safety—the mother’s duty is to prioritize her daughter’s protection by stopping the source of danger and then investigating the underlying causes. Many mistakes stem from emptiness, lack of supervision, or the influence of bad company; identifying the root cause is half the solution.

The next step is rehabilitation. The mother should explain the consequences of her daughter’s actions, clarify what is right with wisdom and gentleness, help her correct the mistake, and encourage repentance and seeking forgiveness if the act constitutes a sin. She should also turn over a new leaf and avoid reminding her daughter of the mistake during every subsequent disagreement, as constant reminders may lead to despair or a loss of self-confidence.

It is important for the mother to recognize that correction is not achieved through harshness or rejection, but through closeness, strengthening the daughter’s spiritual connection, and monitoring her wisely without being overbearing. By being a friend to her daughter, the mother creates an environment where the home is perceived as a safe haven offering love, guidance, and support. This makes the daughter more willing to admit and correct her mistakes, and even less likely to commit them in the first place.

Parenting during this stage requires patience, wisdom, and prayer. True success lies in transforming mistakes into opportunities for growth, maintaining trust and affection between mother and daughter, and raising the girl to be upright and self-confident, knowing that her family is the first line of defense and support in her pursuit of goodness.
