“Rifqa Omar”: Enhancing Quality of Life and Psychological Well-being for the Elderly

The Ministry of Social Affairs, in partnership with Sheikh Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Association, launched the “Rifqat Omar” (Companionship of Life) program at Farah Center within the Care Homes Complex. The initiative aims to enhance the quality of life and psychosocial well-being of the elderly through activities and programs that foster social interaction, stimulate cognitive abilities, and support their active participation in society. This effort aligns with the goal of instilling a culture of gratitude toward this demographic and strengthening collaboration between government entities and civil society organizations.

Minister of Social Affairs, Family, and Childhood Dr. Amthal Al-Huwaili stated that Kuwait places great importance on the care of the elderly, driven by the belief in their significant role and their past contributions to serving their families and the nation. She emphasized that caring for and empowering the elderly is a national responsibility that reflects the authentic values of Kuwaiti society.

Speaking at the opening of the “Rifqat Omar” program on Monday, attended by various officials and stakeholders, Al-Huwaili noted that the program embodies the value of gratitude toward those who dedicated their lives to serving the country and society. She affirmed that the elderly are not merely a relic of the past but represent a national and human asset imbued with wisdom, experience, and generosity, deserving of every respect and care.

She pointed out that the Ministry, in line with Kuwait’s vision to consolidate the principles of social justice and safeguard human dignity throughout all stages of life, is working to develop a comprehensive system of services and programs that guarantee the elderly their right to care, respect, and community participation. This contributes to enhancing their quality of life and preserving their status in society.

Al-Huwaili clarified that “Rifqat Omar” translates this direction into action, going beyond merely providing activities and services to creating a supportive human environment that enhances social interaction, stimulates cognitive abilities, supports mental health, and opens new horizons for the elderly to actively participate in community life. This fosters a sense of belonging and ensures them a dignified and secure life.

She stressed that building a cohesive society begins with caring for all its segments, particularly the elderly, who are a source of wisdom, experience, and generosity. She highlighted the importance of providing an environment that preserves their dignity, enhances their well-being, and enables them to continue their positive role in society.

For his part, Jasem Al-Kandari, Director General of the General Administration of Social Care at the Ministry, affirmed that “Rifqat Omar” embodies a humanitarian message reflecting the society’s gratitude toward the elderly and reinforcing their right to care, respect, and active participation. This is based on the state’s belief that they are a source of wisdom and experience and partners in building society.

He stated that the program is not just a collection of activities and events, but a message of gratitude and appreciation for the elderly, emphasizing their right to live a life characterized by respect, dignity, and peace of mind.

Al-Kandari explained that the program’s slogan, “From a generation that gave... to a generation that continues to give,” underscores that the elderly are not merely recipients of care but are partners in building society, possessing experiences, expertise, and values that contributed to shaping the present and remain a cornerstone for building the future.

He appreciated the continuous support provided by the Minister of Social Affairs to develop social care services and improve the quality of life for beneficiaries. He also expressed his gratitude to Sheikh Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Association for its support and belief in the importance of community partnership in serving the elderly.

For his part, Jamal Al-Nouri, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Association, affirmed that the “Rifqat Omar” program represents a humanitarian message rooted in the values of gratitude and compassion that distinguish Kuwaiti society. It reflects the collective belief that the elderly are a source of expertise and generosity and partners in building the present and the future.

He stated that the launch of the program embodies a heartfelt message, translating the community’s authentic values rooted in compassion and respect for the elderly. He emphasized that the name “Rifqat Omar” carries profound significance, reflecting commitment, support, and inclusion, and symbolizing standing by parents during this stage of their lives.

Al-Hawila affirmed that the launch of the “Rifqat Omar” program, in partnership with Sheikh Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Association, highlights the importance of synergy between state institutions and civil society organizations. She noted that community partnerships constitute a fundamental pillar for the success and sustainability of humanitarian initiatives, and that concerted efforts represent the optimal means to serve humanity and preserve human dignity.

Al-Kandari stated that the Social Care Administration believes true care is not measured by the number of services provided, but by the impact they have on individuals’ lives and their ability to enhance feelings of security, dignity, and belonging, while enabling people to remain active and connected to their communities.

Al-Nouri explained that Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Association supports such initiatives based on a humanitarian vision that transcends traditional aid to focus on empowerment and partnership, thereby enabling the elderly to continue contributing and participating actively through specialized programs that stimulate memory, foster social interaction, and uphold dignity.
