Egypt Earthquake... Passed Without Harm

The earthquake that struck Egypt on Monday morning has passed without major incident, despite causing widespread panic among Egyptians. Reports of its aftermath were scarce, as relevant authorities raised their alert levels and the government’s operations room worked around the clock.

Despite its magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale—roughly equivalent to the 1992 Egyptian earthquake, which measured 5.8 and destroyed buildings, resulting in casualties and injuries—the “dawn earthquake” caused no fatalities, with only one injury recorded.

The Cairo Governorate announced that the control center of the National Network for Emergency and Public Safety received a report of a partial collapse in a building in the Rod El Farag district (north of Cairo). No injuries or deaths were recorded, but three families temporarily evacuated the premises pending an inspection of the building. Additionally, two old properties, each over 130 years old, were identified for inspection.

According to the Ministry of Health, health monitoring resulted in only one injury nationwide, while the state of emergency remains in effect. Meanwhile, the operations room of the Ministry of Local Development and Environment reported no incidents.

For his part, the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, the authority responsible for monitoring earthquakes, announced that stations of the National Earthquake Monitoring Network recorded a tremor 61 kilometers northeast of Sharm El-Sheikh, centered in Suez, with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale. The institute confirmed that no casualties or property damage were reported as a result of the tremor.
