WhatsApp Launches Cleanup Tool to Clear Channel File Accumulation

The technology-focused website Digital Trends revealed that WhatsApp has launched a dedicated cleanup tool for channel files on the Android platform, addressing a long-standing issue that has been silently consuming smartphone storage space without users realizing its source. The site explained that images, videos, and voice messages shared by followed channels gradually accumulate in the background, leaving users suddenly confronted with a storage full warning without understanding the cause.

The new tool began reaching a limited number of beta testers through the latest WhatsApp update on the Google Play Store, months after it was first spotted under development. Until recently, users could manage channel files via storage settings, but the process required manually reviewing each file individually, making it more of a tedious task than a quick maintenance activity.

The tool offers two main options:

• The first is located within each channel’s information page, allowing users to review exactly what that specific channel has stored on their device and filter files by type—images, videos, stickers, and voice messages—before deleting them.

• The second involves long-pressing one or more channels within the Updates section and selecting the “Clear Media Files” option to remove files from multiple channels simultaneously without opening each one individually.

The new tool also includes a feature that protects posts marked with a star from being automatically deleted during the cleanup process, reducing the risk of accidentally losing important content. Currently, this feature remains available only to a limited number of Android beta testers, and the company has not announced a specific release date for the stable version of the app.
