Ministry of Islamic Affairs Opens Registration for Imam, Preacher, and Muazzan Positions

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced the opening of registration for the written examination for the positions of Imam and Khateeb, Imam, and Muazzin for Kuwaiti citizens, from August 3 of next year until September 30, 2026, or until the required number of candidates is filled. The written examination will be held on October 6, 2026.

The ministry clarified that applicants for the positions of “Imam and Khateeb” and “Imam” must be Kuwaiti nationals aged at least 21 years, and possess the required academic qualification and have memorized the specified portion of the Holy Quran according to their educational background.

It specified that holders of university degrees in Islamic studies must have memorized five juz’ (parts), including the 30th juz’ (“Amma”), while holders of non-Islamic university degrees must have memorized ten juz’, including the 30th juz’ (“Amma”). Those holding a high school diploma or equivalent, or a certificate from a Quran House, must have memorized the entire Quran, with mastery of Tajweed rules and recitation. Qualifications issued from outside Kuwait must be accredited by the relevant official authorities.

The ministry added that retirees wishing to apply for these positions must hold at least a high school diploma or a certificate from a Quran House, have memorized five juz’ of the Quran, including the 30th juz’ (“Amma”), and demonstrate proficiency in Tajweed rules and recitation.

Regarding the position of Muazzin, the ministry stated that key eligibility criteria include being a Kuwaiti national who has obtained a high school diploma, a religious institute high school diploma, or an equivalent qualification, or a certificate from a Quran House. Applicants must have memorized three juz’ of the Quran, including the 30th juz’ (“Amma”), observe Tajweed rules, and demonstrate good recitation performance. The minimum age requirement is 18 years. For retirees, the requirement is to have memorized two juz’, one of which must be the 30th juz’ (“Amma”).

The ministry also outlined the conditions for changing the job title from Muazzin to Imam, which include being a Kuwaiti national, having served at least 15 years in the position of Muazzin, and having memorized no less than 15 juz’ of the Quran.
