Jawhara Al-Sabah: We look forward to the arrival of the Kuwaiti judge at international courts

This came during a lecture delivered by Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah on Tuesday at a scientific symposium organized by the Kuwait Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies, titled “UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security: International Commitments and National Applications – The Experience of the State of Kuwait.” The event was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Human Rights Affairs Department, and was moderated by Dr. Ahmed Al-Maqled, Advisor and Deputy Director of the Institute’s Communications, Relations, and Research Sector.

Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah stated that Kuwait has paid significant attention to implementing the resolution by establishing a National Committee chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to coordinate efforts among relevant entities, raise awareness, build capacity, and enhance institutional cooperation in line with international best practices. She noted that the symposium is part of the Committee’s efforts to raise awareness of the resolution’s objectives and strengthen national capacity-building to support its implementation.

Following the symposium, Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that Resolution 1325, adopted by the Security Council in 2000, marked a qualitative leap in recognizing the pivotal role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and protection during armed conflicts.

She added that the State of Kuwait has made progress in empowering women within the justice system, noting that the number of female members of the Public Prosecution and Kuwaiti judges reached 122, accounting for 8 percent, alongside the appointment of the first female Deputy Minister of Justice and the presence of 27 court secretaries.

She expressed her aspiration for Kuwaiti female judges to reach senior positions in international courts, emphasizing that women’s empowerment in the justice sector constitutes one of the fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable development and enhancing security and peace.

The symposium was attended by a number of specialists and interested parties, aiming to raise awareness of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and to showcase the State of Kuwait’s experience in implementing the aforementioned Security Council resolution.
