Carlos Alberto Barreira Leaves Intensive Care

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – Carlos Alberto Parreira, the former coach of the Brazilian national team and 1994 FIFA World Cup winner, has been discharged from the intensive care unit after his health condition improved, the hospital in Rio de Janeiro announced.

Parreira was admitted to the hospital on June 16 due to pneumonia. In late June, his condition deteriorated, necessitating surgery and placement on a mechanical ventilator.

Parreira has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma since 2023, a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system.

He holds the record for the most World Cup appearances as a national team coach. His managerial career includes leading Brazil at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where they won their fourth title, and at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He also coached Kuwait at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, the United Arab Emirates at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Saudi Arabia at the 1998 World Cup in France, and South Africa at the 2010 World Cup hosted on home soil.
