"Souf" Wins Regional Award for Innovation in Energy and Sustainability
The “Sawf” Spinning Center, initiated by the Sadu Artisans Association and developed through a strategic partnership between the association, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), and Livestock Transport and Trading Company, has won the “Energy Innovation Project of 2026” award. Presented by the American Society of Energy Engineers (AEE) across the Middle East and North Africa region, the award recognizes the center’s excellence in applying innovative solutions in energy efficiency and sustainability.
In a press statement, the foundation noted that the “Sawf” Spinning Center is Kuwait’s first sustainable facility for processing local wool, aiming to develop the domestic wool industry and add value to this natural resource, while promoting sustainability and circular economy concepts in national projects.
The foundation added that the project idea originated from the Sadu Artisans Association’s initiative to utilize underused local wool and revive the craft of wool spinning. The foundation adopted the concept and funded a research project implemented by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research to assess the feasibility of producing, processing, and improving the quality of local Naimi sheep wool for use in artisanal industries. The project’s results confirmed the technical and economic viability of this industry, contributing to the establishment of the center as a successful model for transforming scientific research outcomes into a sustainable industrial project.
The impact of the “Sawf” Center extends across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. It contributes to reviving the craft of wool spinning and weaving by providing high-quality local wool used to train community members and preserve this heritage craft. The center also adds value to animal production by professionally utilizing local wool, which was previously underused or exported at low economic value, thereby enhancing the economic viability of livestock farming in Kuwait.
By using clean energy sources, recycling water, and utilizing production waste to manufacture improved soil fertilizer, the project embodies circular economy principles, enhancing resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
The American Society of Energy Engineers awards are among the most prominent specialized honors in the energy sector, given annually to recognize individuals, institutions, and projects that achieve outstanding accomplishments in energy efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. The “Sawf” Center’s win underscores the ability of Kuwaiti projects based on scientific research and national partnerships to compete and excel at both regional and international levels.
