Cocoa Prices Fall... So Why Aren't Chocolate Prices Dropping?

Cocoa prices have begun to decline following a historic surge that pushed chocolate production costs to unprecedented levels. However, consumers may not see lower prices in stores in the near term, as major chocolate companies continue to adjust product pricing and seek new ways to attract buyers.

Futures contracts for cocoa traded at around $5,327 per metric ton, marking a drop of approximately 34 percent over the past year. This follows prices nearing $12,000 per ton at the end of 2024, compared to an average range of $2,000 to $3,000 during the previous two decades.

Chocolate Giants’ Profits

The sharp rise in cocoa prices has placed significant pressure on companies such as Barry Callebaut, Lindt & Sprüngli, and Nestlé, which were forced to raise prices to cope with higher production costs.

Lindt announced that an 11.8 percent price increase contributed to a 7.5 percent decline in chocolate sales volume during the first half of the year, as demand was affected by inflation and weak consumer confidence.

Climate Change Behind the Crisis

The disruption in cocoa prices is primarily linked to poor harvests in West Africa, particularly in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, which produce the majority of the world’s cocoa supply.

The El Niño phenomenon and harsh weather conditions have reduced production through rising temperatures and erratic rainfall, while the impacts of climate change have intensified pressures on farmers and supply chains.

Companies are currently betting on improving margins and boosting sales through new products and varied experiences, rather than directly lowering prices.

Lindt confirmed that it is working to expand its presence on social media platforms to connect product discovery and engagement with the purchasing process, in an effort to win back customers after a period of rising prices and declining demand.
