Samsung Tests New Main Camera Sensor for Galaxy S27 Phones

New leaks suggest that Samsung may finally be ready to stop reusing the same hardware for the main camera in its standard Galaxy S phones, which was first introduced with the Galaxy S22.

The website GalaxyClub reported that some prototypes of the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus models are undergoing testing with a new 50-megapixel main sensor produced by Sony.

This move would end Samsung’s longstanding preference for using its own ISOCELL sensors in the main cameras of its Galaxy S phones, even if the megapixel count remains unchanged.

The Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus are still expected to feature a 50-megapixel main camera, but megapixels are not everything. The newer Sony sensor is capable of capturing more light, improving dynamic range, reducing noise, and providing better raw data for image processing in Samsung phones.

Samsung has been able to improve image quality over several generations thanks to better software, newer processors, and more advanced computational photography techniques.

However, processing capabilities have limits when the core sensor remains largely unchanged. Therefore, adopting a new main sensor would be a significant upgrade, especially after a previous report suggested that the base Galaxy S27 might reuse most of the same camera hardware from the current generation.

There is currently no guarantee that the Sony sensor will make it into the final versions of the phones. The Galaxy S27 series is still in the early stages of development, leaving ample time for these plans to change.

If these reports prove accurate, the standard Galaxy S27 models may finally get a better main camera, while the secondary hardware remains familiar.
