Development Fund: Sponsorship of the "Humanitarian Photography Grant" Continues Kuwait's Humanitarian Mission in Supporting Sustainable Development
Muna Al-Ayaf, Director of the Media Department at the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), affirmed that Kuwait continues to consolidate its leading position as a hub for humanitarian and development work, through its initiatives and institutions that have made sustainable development and human capacity building a steadfast approach, the impact of which extends to various countries around the world. She noted that “the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development has embodied this civilizational role for over six decades, by financing development projects that contribute to improving the quality of life and enhancing stability and development in fraternal and friendly nations.”
In a statement, Al-Ayaf said that the Fund’s patronage of the second edition of the “Humanitarian Photography Grant” under the slogan “Water is Life” is an extension of this humanitarian and developmental mission, stemming from its belief in the importance of supporting initiatives that raise awareness of humanitarian issues and utilize documentary photography as an impactful medium to highlight challenges related to water and sustainable development, in line with international efforts to ensure universal access to clean and safe water.
She added that “the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development believes that sustainable development is not limited to implementing projects and financing infrastructure, but also includes investing in human awareness and supporting initiatives that convey the realities of the most needy communities to the world,” emphasizing that “documentary photography has today become one of the most influential communication tools for documenting facts, conveying humanitarian messages, and motivating the international community to support development issues.”
Al-Ayaf clarified that “the Fund boasts a rich developmental record spanning over six decades, during which it contributed to financing thousands of development projects in dozens of countries, with the water and infrastructure sector receiving the largest share of these efforts, based on Kuwait’s conviction that providing clean water constitutes the cornerstone of development and a pillar for achieving health, education, food security, and economic and social stability.”
She stressed that “the water crisis is no longer merely a service-related challenge, but has become one of the most prominent humanitarian and developmental issues directly affecting the lives of millions of people, making its documentation through photography an effective means of highlighting the scale of these challenges and conveying them to policymakers, international organizations, and global public opinion, thereby helping to stimulate initiatives aimed at finding sustainable solutions.”
Al-Ayaf pointed out that the “Water is Life” grant represents a distinctive initiative that combines humanitarian action with visual creativity, “which will support ten documentary photography projects, produce over 200 professional photographs, organize traveling photographic exhibitions, publish a specialized book, and create an open digital archive serving humanitarian organizations, researchers, and media outlets, thereby enhancing the documentation and global dissemination of water-related issues.”
She added that “the Fund’s support for this initiative reflects its commitment to building effective partnerships with humanitarian, media, and cultural institutions, contributing to leveraging visual arts to serve sustainable development goals and strengthening the role of humanitarian media in conveying realities and stimulating international initiatives to address the challenges facing the most vulnerable communities.”
Concluding her statement, Al-Ayaf emphasized that the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development’s sponsorship of the Humanitarian Photography Grant extends the pioneering humanitarian role played by the State of Kuwait, and embodies its vision that development is not limited to project implementation, but also encompasses raising awareness, strengthening partnerships, and amplifying the human voice on the global stage. She expressed her hope that the outcomes of the grant would transform images into a global message that inspires humanitarian action, supports the Sustainable Development Goals, and highlights the stories of communities facing water challenges, thereby reflecting Kuwait’s civilized and humanitarian face and its leadership in serving humanity wherever it may be.
