Jürgen Klopp as Coach of the German National Team

Jurgen Klopp was appointed on Friday as the new head coach of the German national football team, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), said at a press conference in Frankfurt, “We are very pleased to be able to present Jurgen Klopp as our new coach today.”

He clarified that Klopp’s contract will run until the summer of 2030, covering the next World Cup to be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, and noted that the contract will take effect on August 15.

Nagelsmann had resigned from his position as coach of the “Die Mannschaft” after Germany’s elimination by Paraguay in the Round of 32 of the World Cup finals hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nagelsmann, 38, had held the position since September 2023, but following the exit from the World Cup Round of 32, he met with the DFB for three hours to discuss the latest failure.

Germany has struggled in the last three World Cup editions, exiting in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, and managing only one victory in the knockout stages across the last five major tournaments, when they reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, which they hosted.

Klopp previously had successful managerial stints with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, before taking charge of Liverpool in England, where he led them to the English Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year drought, a year after winning the UEFA Champions League.
