Traffic Noise May Increase Risk of Parkinson’s Disease: Study Warns
Noise from traffic is no longer just a source of annoyance or sleep disruption; a recent scientific study suggests it may be linked to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease, one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide, according to the journal JAMA Neurology.
The study examined the relationship between long-term exposure to highway and traffic noise and the likelihood of developing Parkinson’s disease, representing one of the largest studies to date on the impact of environmental noise on brain health.
Researchers relied on data from more than 3.1 million people in Denmark, followed from 2000 to 2017, comparing the noise levels participants were exposed to near their residences with cases later diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
During the follow-up period, the team identified more than 20,000 cases of the disease and found that individuals exposed to higher levels of traffic noise over long periods were more likely to develop the condition compared to those living in quieter areas.
The results showed that each increase of approximately 11.5 decibels in traffic-related noise was associated with a nearly 3% rise in the risk of Parkinson’s disease, even after researchers accounted for other factors such as air pollution, income, and education level.
The study also indicated that having a quiet side of the home, such as a room or facade far from the road, may be linked to a reduced risk, highlighting the importance of minimizing continuous noise exposure.
The study does not prove that noise directly causes Parkinson’s disease, but it provides evidence of a potential association.
Researchers suggest that prolonged exposure to loud sounds may affect the body through several pathways, including sleep disruption, increased chronic stress, and the triggering of inflammation, all of which can in turn impact nervous system health.
Researchers believe the study’s findings add a new dimension to the discussion on noise pollution, which is often viewed merely as a comfort issue, while growing research points to its potential effects on the heart, sleep, mental health, and the brain.
The team emphasized the need for further studies to better understand the relationship, but current results support the importance of implementing solutions to reduce noise in busy residential areas.
The researchers added that addressing the potential impacts of traffic noise involves more than just lowering noise levels; it can be achieved by designing quieter residential environments through improved building insulation, traffic management, placing bedrooms away from noise sources, and designing homes to provide residents with a quiet facade or courtyard.
They noted that providing living spaces less exposed to noise could represent a practical solution to mitigate potential health risks, especially in major cities where significantly reducing car traffic is difficult, making urban planning a key tool in limiting the effects of noise pollution.
