Bezos holds talks to buy stake in Liverpool

London (AFP) – US billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, has held talks about joining an alliance led by British-Indian investor Amit Bhatia, who is interested in buying a minority stake in Liverpool, the 20-time English Premier League football champions, according to reports.
Bezos, one of the world’s richest men, could become part of the group led by Bhatia, brother-in-law of billionaire and steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.
Sky News reported that Bezos is interested in the deal but indicated that he has not yet made a final decision to proceed with the potential plan.
Reports suggest that Bezos previously considered submitting bids to purchase the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders of the National Football League, but decided not to pursue either deal.
Bhatia’s (46) interest in Liverpool came on the same day he resigned from the board of directors of English Championship club Queens Park Rangers, ending an 18-year association with the team by transferring his stake to majority owner Robin Kainalalingam.
In 2023, Fenway Sports Group sold a minority stake in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty, and any deal with Bhatia, if completed, is expected to follow the same approach.
According to the Financial Times, any deal with the alliance led by Bhatia would value Liverpool at more than $6 billion.
Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team, purchased Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million.
