Fraud Ignites Protests in India

New Delhi (AFP) – Indian police fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters marching toward Parliament in New Delhi, protesting alleged cheating in university exams and demanding the resignation of the education minister.

Security forces were deployed in large numbers, firing tear gas at the demonstrators, who were predominantly young students, and beating them with batons near a square in the capital where they had gathered, according to a France Press correspondent.

The protesters gathered under the call of the “Cricketer’s People Party,” a movement recently launched online, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, whom they hold responsible for the irregularities.

Protester K.M. Gulshan (19 years old) told AFP, “We want the government to listen to us, not silence us.”

On social media, it was stated, “Anyone who violates this ban is subject to criminal prosecution.”
