Scaloni: We tried until the end

East Rutherford – AFP – Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni cast doubt on his future with the national team following the 2026 World Cup final loss to Spain, ending his press conference in tears and leaving abruptly.

Scaloni, 48, is under contract until next December, while Argentine media had previously reported an oral agreement with the Argentine Football Association to extend his deal beyond the 2030 World Cup.

Scaloni said, “I already have an idea of what I want to do. I will honor my contract, and then we will see what happens. I feel the need to think, because I don’t know if something great like this can be achieved again.”

Scaloni took charge of the Albiceleste in 2018 and led them four years later to their third world title, following those of 1978 and 1986.

The coach was unable to hold back his emotions, and tears streamed down his face during the press conference. His voice choked with emotion as he concluded, saying, “It was a dream for everyone, and we fought until the last minute. It is very difficult and truly painful. I am very sorry.”
