De la Fuente: We were forced to struggle

East Rutherford – AFP – Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said he knew his national team “would have to suffer” to defeat Argentina, after “La Roja” secured a 1-0 victory over the defensively solid “Albiceleste” in extra time in New Jersey, in the 2026 World Cup final and to claim the title.

He said: “We should have scored earlier, but the goalkeeper made several saves. We needed to be better at finishing off attacks, but it was a World Cup final, and we knew we would have to suffer.”

The coach added that he felt “great pride, especially toward this generation of players who grew up with the idea of being the best team, giving their best, and serving as role models as a group, a team, and a family.”

De la Fuente continued: “These players possess exceptional potential and talent. It is an honor to accompany them on this journey. I am deeply moved. These players have won everything, and they are a model for Spain and for Spanish youth.”
