Auyarzapal: A Well-Deserved Triumph

East Rutherford – AFP – Spain’s 2026 World Cup top scorer, Mikel Oyarzabal, affirmed “La Roja’s” right to claim the world title, despite doubts raised after their opening draw with Cape Verde.
Oyarzabal, who scored five goals in the tournament, said, “A month ago, there were those who doubted our ability to achieve this feat, but we never doubted for a moment.”
He added, “We are not yet fully aware of the magnitude of what we have achieved, not only because we are world champions, but also because we won the title after winning the European Championship,” a reference to Spain’s victory in Euro 2024.
The Real Sociedad captain used the words “happiness” and “pride” to describe his feelings after winning the World Cup, downplaying the significance of his five goals in the tournament.
He continued, “What will remain in history is the star on the shirt and the medal. I am happy to have helped the team, and I am happy for Ferran (Torres). Just as Iniesta’s goal will remain etched in memory, Ferran’s goal will also be remembered for a long time.”
