Egyptian Ministry of Labor Discusses Draft Law to Protect Domestic Workers
The Egyptian Ministry of Labor announced that Minister of Labor Hassan Radad met with a delegation from the International Labour Organization (ILO), led by Eric Ouellet, to discuss the regulation of domestic workers, a file that has moved from being a proposed topic of discussion to actual implementation. This is being achieved through the preparation of a comprehensive bill to regulate this sector, reflecting the state’s commitment to extending legal and social protection to all categories of workers.
The ministry added that the drafting of the law follows a participatory approach, relying on dialogue with various stakeholders and drawing on international experiences, while taking into account the specificities of Egyptian society and the nature of social relations within it, to ensure the emergence of a balanced and enforceable legislation.
Meanwhile, a recent report issued by the Gold Observatory revealed that the total value of foreign trade in Egypt’s gold sector has reached approximately $20 billion since 2022, over a five-year period. This growth was driven by record-breaking export activity, alongside an unprecedented qualitative leap in raw gold imports during the current and previous years.
The report noted that non-monetary raw gold imports amounted to approximately $3.65 billion from the beginning of 2026 until the end of April, while exports recorded $1.941 billion during the first five months of the current year. These figures reflect a natural corrective movement compared to the exceptional base year.
In government moves to regulate bread production, government sources stated that a plan approved by the government last week would be implemented. The plan involves establishing 300 strategic bakeries in the first phase across governorates. This step aims to strengthen the food security system and develop the infrastructure of the bread production sector, thereby contributing to market stability and ensuring the availability of one of the most important strategic commodities for citizens.
