Messi-Yamal... The Clash of Generations
In 2007, no one could have imagined that the image capturing Argentine star Lionel Messi holding a baby during a charity photoshoot would become one of the most circulated images in football history.
That baby was Lamine Yamal, the child who, 19 years later, would emerge as the leader of Spain’s new generation, standing face-to-face against his idol in the 2026 World Cup final in North America.
At 39, Messi is competing in what is expected to be his final World Cup final. The Argentina captain is not only seeking a new title, but also a historic achievement: leading his national team to back-to-back world championships. He has continued to deliver dazzling performances, guiding Argentina to the final after a dramatic 2-1 semi-final victory over England, in which he scored two goals and provided two crucial assists.
Yamal, meanwhile, has transformed from the infant in the photo with Messi into one of the world’s most prominent football stars, playing for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team, “La Roja.” The Spanish winger led his country to the final with steadily improving performances, despite having scored only one goal so far, and has become a symbol of a new generation that believes its time has come.
Before the tournament, Yamal did not hide his desire to face Messi in the final, describing the prospect of playing against him as “a match every player dreams of.”
Yamal contributed to Spain’s 2-0 semi-final victory over France by winning the penalty that Micah Urbazaba converted for the opening goal.
The final brings together two teams that have delivered their best performances of the tournament: Argentina, the defending champions, boasting the strongest attack, and Spain, the European champions, with the strongest defense, having conceded only one goal throughout their run to the final.
A story like this may never be repeated: a player who once held a baby in his arms, only to face him years later in the biggest match in world football.
As the clash between the two stars approaches, attention has returned to the iconic photograph taken by Spanish photographer Juan Monfort in the locker room shower at Camp Nou. Monfort described the image as “a true miracle of fate.”
Speaking to the BBC, he said, “It is one of the most beautiful coincidences that could ever happen. If someone had written this story for a movie, everyone would have said it was unrealistic.” He added, “For me, it is painful. My heart is split in two.”
Monfort believes that the World Cup final meeting between Messi and Yamal marks the end of a story that began nearly two decades ago. “I feel we are closing the circle of their story. It is a happy ending,” he said.
Messi may lift the trophy for the second time in his career, writing the perfect conclusion to his legendary career, or Yamal may close the curtain on an era and open a new one bearing his name, adding a world title to his continental honors.
