American University of Kuwait Receives Nomination for Academic Accreditation from MSCHE
The American University in Kuwait (AUK) announced that it has achieved Candidate for Accreditation Status from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), on March 12, 2026, with the Commission officially announcing this decision on March 23.
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is one of the institutional accreditation bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It oversees the accreditation of more than 500 higher education institutions in the United States and some other countries, including prestigious universities such as Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and the American University of Beirut.
The university’s candidacy for accreditation embodies its firm commitment to the highest standards of quality and academic excellence, and confirms that its educational system aligns with recognized international standards. It also represents a pivotal step on the path to achieving full institutional accreditation. This achievement follows a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a team of academic reviewers from MSCHE during November 2025. The university met all seven accreditation standards without any mandatory requirements, which is the highest level of assessment achievable at this stage. Additionally, the university received four official commendations for its institutional transparency, collaborative work culture, quality of general education programs, and excellence in student support services.
With this achievement, the American University in Kuwait has become the first higher education institution in the State of Kuwait to receive candidacy for accreditation from MSCHE. It joins an elite group of only 16 educational institutions outside the United States affiliated with the Commission. It is also the first new academic institution in the Middle East to attain this status in over two decades, joining distinguished regional institutions that hold academic accreditation, including the American University in Cairo, the American University of Beirut, and the American University in Sharjah.
The American University in Kuwait currently holds six U.S. academic accreditations, including AACSB accreditation for business, ABET accreditation for engineering and computer science, AALE accreditation for humanities programs, CEA accreditation for the Intensive English Program, and NASAD recognition for the graphic design program, alongside accreditation from the Council for Private Universities in the State of Kuwait. Obtaining candidacy for accreditation from MSCHE enhances the university’s standing and reaffirms its ongoing commitment to achieving the highest standards of quality and international institutional accreditation.
