Mexican President Sheinbaum to attend World Cup final

Mexico City - AFP - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final tomorrow, Sunday, at MetLife Stadium in the New York suburbs, following an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Sheinbaum revealed her visit to the United States after declining to attend matches held in Mexico, despite the country being one of the three host nations alongside Canada.

Speaking to journalists, the Mexican president said, “I received an invitation from President Trump to attend the World Cup final on Sunday, and I have decided to participate because it is a direct invitation from the President of the United States.”

Although Sheinbaum and Trump have spoken by phone on several occasions, this will be only their second face-to-face meeting. The two previously met in December 2025 during the World Cup draw in Washington.

Spanish King Felipe VI is also scheduled to attend the final alongside Trump, while Argentine President Javier Milei will not be present, having canceled his trip due to pessimism.
