Netherlands: More than 900 deaths during the recent heatwave

The institute estimated that excess deaths during the period from June 22 to July 5 amounted to approximately 911 cases, compared to the expected number of deaths during that same period.

The southern and eastern regions, which recorded the highest temperatures during the heatwave, experienced the largest increase in mortality rates, with excess deaths reaching 576 cases. Among these, 547 excess deaths were among individuals aged 80 and older, representing the largest increase across all age groups.

In a statement, the institute said, “The cause of death is unknown, but it is highly likely that heat played a role. It is important to continue exercising caution regarding the health effects of heat.”

The institute clarified that older adults and people with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of severe heatwaves, adding that elevated air pollution levels during the heatwave may have imposed additional burdens on these groups.

Data from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute showed that temperatures rose sharply between June 22 and June 28, with the highest recorded temperature reaching 39.4 degrees Celsius.
