A new study published in the journal Nature Communications reveals that drinking coffee, whether caffeinated or decaffeinated, actually alters the composition of gut bacteria, potentially improving mood and enhancing cognitive abilities. This is the first study to demonstrate that the effects of coffee extend beyond its well-known stimulant properties.
Researchers at APC Microbiome Ireland followed 31 coffee drinkers (consuming three to five cups daily) and 31 non-coffee drinkers, using psychological assessments, dietary logs, and analysis of stool and urine samples. After a two-week period of coffee abstinence, participants were reintroduced to coffee in a blinded manner; half received caffeinated coffee, while the other half received decaffeinated coffee.
Key findings and future applications highlighted by the study include:
• A mechanism independent of caffeine: John Cryan, the lead researcher and co-author of the study, stated, “Coffee is more than just caffeine. It is a complex dietary factor that interacts with our gut microbes, our metabolism, and even our emotional well-being. Our results suggest that coffee, whether caffeinated or not, can influence health in distinct yet integrated ways.”
• The gut-brain axis: Researchers focused on the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication pathway between the gut microbiome and the brain, emphasizing that these effects occur independently of caffeine in healthy participants.
• Improved mood and cognition: The results showed that both types of coffee led to improvements in mood, reduced stress, and, in some cases, enhanced mental performance.
• A new understanding of benefits: While previous research has linked coffee to a range of health benefits, the precise mechanisms behind many of these effects have remained unclear. This study offers a compelling microbial explanation for how coffee affects mental health.
Researchers plan to conduct further studies to understand how coffee influences memory consolidation and retrieval, and to use targeted manipulation techniques to better understand the causal relationships within these complex neural pathways.
