Registration begins for the 642nd Gulf Marathon

To reinforce its role in supporting community sustainability initiatives, Gulf Bank and Savex Sports Events Management announced the opening of early registration for the 12th edition of the “Gulf Bank 642 Marathon,” the only marathon in Kuwait with global classification, which will take place on November 28 next year.
Savex, the organizer of the marathon events, in collaboration with the bank, finalized the design of the medals for winners across various marathon categories, as well as the athletic apparel to be distributed to participants prior to the race. These items reflect the shared values and objectives of organizing the marathon, highlighting the commitment to preserving heritage and reinforcing sustainability concepts within society.
This year, the medals have become one of the most prominent elements of the “Gulf 642 Marathon” experience. They are no longer just symbols of race completion but have evolved into collectible items eagerly anticipated by runners each year, with each edition featuring a story inspired by Kuwait. This year’s medals were designed to highlight Kuwait’s identity, heritage, and natural landscapes, providing participants with a meaningful souvenir that reflects their achievement and connection to the homeland.
The marathon offers participants numerous opportunities and open categories for competitors of all fitness levels. It consists of four categories open to all participants: a 5-kilometer walk/run, a 10-kilometer run, a half-marathon of 21 kilometers, and a full marathon of 42 kilometers. Participants must be at least 11 years old for the 5-kilometer race, 16 years old for the 10-kilometer race, and 18 years old for the half-marathon.
The 11th edition of the marathon witnessed record-breaking participation, with over 10,000 competitors from various categories, including approximately 5,000 non-Kuwaitis. The event is characterized by diversity and inclusivity, with women comprising 41% of total participants compared to 59% for men. The youngest competitor was 10 years old, while the oldest was 85 years old, alongside the participation of many individuals with special needs.
The bank’s continuous sponsorship of the marathon aligns with its support for national efforts to enhance community sports culture, considered a pillar of sustainable development through investment in human capital and capacity building. This event is a pioneering initiative in Kuwait and the region, aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and making sports an integral part of individuals’ and families’ daily lives, amid rising rates of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, which pose significant health challenges to society.
Through the marathon, Gulf Bank aims to support youth and national initiatives, whether through its partnership with the organizing company or by enabling numerous small and medium-sized enterprises to participate. Additionally, it supports Kuwaiti talent and professional runners, helping them represent Kuwait in international marathons.
The “Gulf Marathon” is the largest local sports event held in the heart of the capital, with participants passing through several famous landmarks, including the Kuwait Towers, Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, the Grand Mosque, Al-Mubarakiya Souq, and the Gulf Bank headquarters, among others. Winners from various categories receive valuable medals and prizes.
