Forlán appointed coach of Uruguay

Bielsa had resigned from his post after the national team was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada at the group stage.

Forlán (47) faces a major challenge in his managerial career, tasked with rebuilding a squad that entered the World Cup with high ambitions but departed with one of its worst performances in history.

The Uruguayan Football Association stated in a press release that Forlán’s contract will run until March 2027, after which the federation will evaluate his performance before deciding whether to extend his contract or appoint a new coach for the next World Cup.

According to the federation, Forlán will continue to coach the Uruguay U-20 national team, which will participate in the 2027 South American Youth Championship, a crucial tournament for developing a new generation of players.

Forlán is Uruguay’s third all-time top scorer with 36 goals. He also shone at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, and won the Copa América title in 2011.
