2026 World Cup: The 'Tango' wants to play in Maradona's jersey

The Argentina national team has requested to play England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals in North America wearing the blue jersey, rather than their traditional white-and-light-blue striped kit.

Argentine journalist Gastón Idal confirmed that the “Tango” squad submitted a request to FIFA to wear the blue jersey for the second time in this World Cup, following their match against Jordan.

He noted that the final decision will be issued tomorrow, Tuesday, one day before the anticipated match against the “Three Lions.”

It appears Argentina wishes to emulate the historic encounter between the two sides at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where Diego Maradona scored two iconic goals: the first with his hand and the second after dribbling past several English players.

Since that match, Argentina has faced England twice at the World Cup, wearing their original striped kit in both encounters.

The first match ended in a 2-2 draw at the 1998 World Cup in France, with Argentina advancing to the quarterfinals via penalty shootout. England won the second meeting 1-0 in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
