Vitamin K2 for Artery Health... A Secret Many Are Unaware Of

A comprehensive scientific review published in the journal of the American Heart Association revealed that vitamin K2, less well-known than its cousin K1, may be an as-yet-undiscovered key to cardiovascular and arterial health. It helps direct calcium away from artery walls—where it causes hardening and plaque buildup—and toward the bones and teeth, where the body has a strong need for it.

Researchers clarified that a deficiency in vitamin K2 leads to calcium accumulation in the blood vessels, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. Conversely, adequate levels of K2 have been associated with a reduction in cardiovascular disease mortality of up to 57 percent in some long-term studies.

• Fermented foods such as natto (fermented soybeans), which contain the highest known concentration of K2.

Dr. Kate Rainer, a preventive nutrition specialist, emphasized that the body absorbs K2 more effectively when consumed with healthy fats. Additionally, taking vitamin K2 alongside vitamin D produces a synergistic effect in regulating calcium. However, she warned that high-dose supplements may interfere with blood-thinning medications (such as warfarin), urging individuals to consult a physician before starting any new dietary regimen or supplements.

It is worth noting that vitamin K2 deficiency is common in modern diets due to the low consumption of fermented foods and reliance on animal products from non-pasture-raised livestock.
