France-Spain... Firepower Attack and Iron Defense
Dallas – AFP – The outcome of the 2026 World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, to be played next Tuesday in Dallas, may hinge on whether French striker Kylian Mbappé can penetrate the Spanish defensive duo of Émery Laporte and Pau Cubarsí, as well as on whether French defender Lucas Digne can contain the rising Spanish talent Lamine Yamal.
Mbappé, captain and star of the French national team who has yet to be stopped in the United States, currently leads the tournament’s scoring charts tied with Argentina’s Lionel Messi (eight goals each). He will face the strongest defense in the competition, which has conceded only one goal, anchored by the well-coordinated center-back pairing of Laporte and Cubarsí.
The three players know each other well after facing off last season in La Liga. The French striker, who plays for Real Madrid, has previously outplayed the Spanish defenders.
In last October’s “Clásico” at the Santiago Bernabéu, Mbappé scored in a match where Cubarsí was a starter, during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona. However, he failed to score in the Spanish Super Cup final (a 2-3 loss) in January and in the second leg (a 0-2 defeat) at Camp Nou in May, both matches in which Cubarsí played the full 90 minutes.
The French captain was more effective against Athletic Bilbao, led by Laporte. In the first leg in December at the San Mamés stadium, with the French-Spanish defender starting, Mbappé scored a brace. In the return leg, in Laporte’s absence, he netted a goal that secured him the La Liga top scorer title with 25 goals.
Mbappé enters the clash with great confidence and a decisive presence in the United States, but he will need to find a weakness in the defensive partnership. Laporte (32) brings experience from major tournaments with the Spanish national team, including the recent UEFA European Championship in Germany, which Spain won. Cubarsí (19), Paris 2024 Olympic champion, represents youth and boldness. Both are key pillars of coach Luis de la Fuente’s possession-based style.
If Mbappé struggles against Spain, France has other attacking weapons, such as Ousmane Dembélé (five goals) and Michael Olise (five assists), to break down a solid defense that may still leave spaces, as seen in their recent thrilling encounter, which Spain won 5-4 in the UEFA Nations League.
On the other side, left-back Digne, who has established himself as a starter over Saudi club Al-Hilal’s Theo Hernández thanks to his defensive solidity, faces the daunting task of stopping Yamal.
This matchup poses a significant test for the English Aston Villa defender, in a position that may be France’s weakest link, as coach Didier Deschamps has only found his first-choice player during the tournament itself.
Meanwhile, Barcelona forward Yamal, who arrived in the United States dealing with a muscle injury, has begun to gradually regain his form amid the intensifying competition.
Despite scoring only one goal since the start of the tournament, Yamal played a crucial role in Spain’s qualification for the semi-finals against Belgium, through his dazzling dribbling and creative touches.
The considerable effort provided by Desire Doué or the defensive discipline of Bradley Barcola, the left wingers whom Deschamps alternates, may be essential in supporting Digne in containing Yamal.
Despite the numerous injuries he has suffered since winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024, and his failure to fully regain his peak form, Rodri (30, 63 caps) remains Spain’s captain, the “metronome” and central pivot of La Roja’s play. However, he will also be tasked with cutting off passing lanes toward Aurelien Tchouameni, the playmaker who has shown a slight dip in form in the last two matches.
Conversely, Tchouameni must rediscover his ability to move between the lines and orchestrate play against his toughest opponent in the tournament, a quality that allowed him to shine during the group stage.
In head-to-head encounters across all competitions, Spain holds a historical advantage with 18 wins to France’s 13, alongside seven draws.
In the World Cup, the two sides have met only once, with France winning 3-1 in the round of 16 at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Spain took the lead through David Villa (26th minute, penalty), but France equalized via Franck Ribery (41st minute). In the second half, Patrick Vieira scored the second goal (83rd minute), and Zinedine Zidane completed the “Les Bleus’” hat-trick in stoppage time (90+3) to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
