Smart Sensors... for Structural Building Safety

Following the success of the structural safety monitoring project at the Al Hamra Tower, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research is expanding the scope of the trial by installing smart sensors on another building, as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing structural safety using the latest technologies, in coordination with relevant authorities.
The Institute has conducted specialized scientific research in the field of structural safety monitoring for high-rise buildings, relying on the installation of sensors and probes to measure building responses to dynamic loads caused by wind speed, storms, environmental factors, and various external influences.
The Institute began implementing the project at Al Hamra Tower by developing a high-precision computational model, along with mathematical algorithms and user-friendly computer codes, which are employed for continuous building monitoring. Recorded data are automatically and continuously analyzed to detect any changes or damage that may occur in the building’s structural system, enabling early intervention before issues escalate.
The research team also succeeded in developing an advanced structural safety monitoring technology in Kuwait and applying it to Al Hamra Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Kuwait City. This step represents a significant leap forward in supporting sustainable smart city projects, leveraging modern sensing technologies and engineering intelligence.
This technology provides accurate and real-time data on infrastructure safety and identifies areas most vulnerable to impact during emergencies such as earthquakes and sandstorms, thereby enhancing the capacity of relevant government authorities to respond swiftly and make efficient and effective decisions.
