Mexico City – AFP – More than 17,000 police officers will be deployed to prevent any incidents on the streets of Mexico City on Monday morning, as Mexico faces host nation England in a World Cup 2026 quarterfinal qualifier, according to local authorities.

The streets of the Mexican capital saw hundreds of thousands of people gather to celebrate Mexico’s four previous victories. The celebrations following Tuesday’s win over Ecuador attracted more than one million fans and resulted in four deaths, three of whom suffocated due to crowd crush.

Monday’s match will be the final World Cup 2026 game to be held on Mexican soil, with the tournament co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Approximately 7,500 police officers will be stationed inside and around the Azteca Stadium.

At the famous Angel of Independence plaza, which serves as the main celebration hub, entry will be limited to 25,000 people, or four persons per square meter, according to Mexico City Security Minister Pablo Vazquez during a press conference.

Additionally, 62 giant screens will be installed along Paseo de la Reforma Avenue to allow fans to watch the match, but access to the area will be strictly controlled to avoid overcrowding.
