Dismissal of Hossam Hassan from Coaching the Egyptian National Football Team

The Egyptian Football Association officially announced the dismissal of Egypt’s senior national team head coach, Hossam Hassan, following his ban from media appearances due to his involvement in personal disputes covered by the media in recent weeks. In its statement, the association thanked Coach Hossam Hassan for his contributions to the national team and simultaneously announced that Egyptian coach Ali Maher would take over the role in the coming period.

Coach Hossam Hassan assumed leadership of the Pharaohs on February 6, 2024, succeeding Portuguese coach Rui Vitória. He successfully guided Egypt to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup without a single defeat in the qualifying campaign, topping Group 1 with 26 points from 10 matches, recording eight wins and two draws, conceding only two goals while scoring 20.

At the 2026 World Cup, Hossam Hassan led Egypt to advance past the group stage for the first time in the Pharaohs’ World Cup history. After playing three group matches, Egypt secured a 3-1 victory over New Zealand and drew 1-1 with both Belgium and Iran, before defeating Australia in the Round of 32 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Egypt’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a 3-2 loss to Argentina, concluding the tournament with their best-ever World Cup performance.

Under his leadership, the Egyptian national team played 38 matches across various competitions and friendlies, achieving 20 wins, 12 draws, and 6 defeats. The team scored 58 goals and conceded 27, resulting in a win rate of approximately 52.6% of all matches played.
