Mays Al-Suqoor - The Italian Ambassador to Kuwait, Lorenzo Morini, affirmed that Kuwait-Italy relations represent a distinguished model of strategic partnership based on mutual trust, shared values, and principles. He emphasized that the friendship between the two countries and their friendly peoples has grown stronger thanks to their long history of cooperation, solidarity, and shared stances.

This statement was made during a speech delivered at a reception hosted by the embassy to mark Italy’s National Day, the Anniversary of Italian Unification, and the Italian Armed Forces Day. The event was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad Al-Mushaan, Commander of the Kuwait Air Force Lieutenant General Fahad Al-Kharinj, along with a number of officials, ambassadors, heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Kuwait, and friends of the embassy.

Morini stated that the recent visit by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Kuwait marked a historic and significant milestone in the trajectory of bilateral relations, reflecting the depth of friendship between the leaderships of both countries. He added that the visit established a new phase of cooperation between the two nations, witnessing the signing of several important agreements and the adoption of the Italian-Kuwaiti Action Plan for 2027–2030, which serves as an ambitious roadmap to enhance bilateral cooperation over the next four years across various fields of mutual interest.

He noted that the plan includes strengthening political dialogue and cooperation in defense, security, economy, justice, as well as creative projects, cultural heritage, social policies, and environmental issues.

Morini stressed that the participation of Italian soldiers in supporting Kuwait over decades is a tangible testament to the depth of friendship, and indeed brotherhood, between the two countries. He pointed out that Italian forces have stood by Kuwait in all circumstances, from their participation in the country’s liberation in 1991, through supporting the Kuwaiti Armed Forces in their modernization and development journey, to their role in supporting regional stability and their participation in the international coalition against ISIS.

He highlighted that approximately 400 Italian soldiers were stationed in Kuwait last February, mostly at the Ali Al-Salim Air Base. Despite the outbreak of conflict and intense attacks, they continued to carry out their duties and did not leave their positions, even though they were forced to spend long weeks in shelters under extremely difficult conditions.

He added that Italy recognized during that period the importance of standing by its partners and the potential need for the Kuwaiti Armed Forces to receive support from international allies. He confirmed that Italian soldiers remained on standby to provide necessary assistance, and that members of the Italian embassy continued their duties and remained in Kuwait even during the most intense phases of the conflict.
