The 40th Arab Conference of Heads of Drug Control Agencies, concluding its sessions in Tunis on Thursday, called for the need for member states to develop national plans, strategies, and legislation to keep pace with the transformations witnessed by drug-related crimes in the Arab region and worldwide. The General Secretariat of the Arab Ministers of Interior Council stated in a statement that the conference emphasized the necessity of enhancing cooperation among Arab agencies in the field of drug control, enabling them to anticipate the future in confronting developments, particularly the emergence of new types of drugs. The final statement commended the working paper prepared by Kuwait on trends and emerging threats from manufactured drugs, and urged drug control agencies in member states to utilize it. It also called for giving due importance to conducting parallel financial investigations into those involved in drug trafficking cases and money laundering crimes derived from drug trade, as well as the use of digital currencies in this field. Regarding the Arab Drug Observatory, the conference urged member states that have not yet appointed their contact points for the Observatory to do so, thereby strengthening the Observatory’s ability to carry out its functions. It also called on countries that do not have national drug observatories to work on establishing such observatories, contributing to facilitating the provision of the necessary information and data to the Arab Drug Observatory. As part of efforts to intensify awareness campaigns, the conference designated the period from June 22 to 28 of each year as the Arab Week for Drug Prevention and Control, urging member states to celebrate it and intensify awareness programs during this period. The conference was hosted by the General Secretariat of the Arab Ministers of Interior Council in Tunis, with participation from heads of drug control agencies and representatives from interior ministries in Arab countries, including Kuwait, which was represented by the Director General of the General Administration for Drug Control at the Ministry of Interior, Major General Mohammed Qabazard.
