Why do we postpone joy until a suitable occasion, waiting to relax until we set a date for a vacation, convincing ourselves that happiness can only come after our circumstances improve? Why? When we know that the days of our lives that pass will never return, we come closer to the realization that postponing all of this does not guarantee its realization or our enjoyment of it. Our lives are wasted in waiting, illusion, and delaying the enjoyment of everything, the simple as well as the difficult. We fear death greatly, yet at the same time, we do not fear losing our lives from our hands without giving happiness, relaxation, and enjoyment their due place in our lives. How many times have we thought about something, simply out of fear that it might happen, even though there is also a possibility that it will not, thus losing a beautiful day in our lives just because we occupied ourselves with worrying about a problem that did not occur? How skilled we are at reminding ourselves and souring our mood, calculating what we have lost and what we might lose in terms of money, while at the same time being far from calculating what we lose in terms of our lifespan, as we remain trapped in this cycle of sorrow and anxiety. The most precious thing we possess in life is not money or possessions, but the time remaining to us. The loss of money can be compensated, and the loss of possessions may be made up for, but a day lost from our lives cannot be compensated. There is a significant difference between the hardships imposed on us by life at all its stages, and the burdens we create for ourselves and insist on remaining in their vortex. We are not required to be happy all the time, and this is impossible; life contains disappointments, losses, defeats, illness, and failure. Most of us today, given our surrounding circumstances, live as prisoners of an exhausting past and a worrying future that may reach the stage of terror. Unfortunately, few of us know how to enjoy the present. Thus, years pass without being enjoyed, not because we lacked beautiful opportunities, but because we failed to notice them as they passed before us. There are many small things surrounding our days and lives that could bring us happiness, yet unfortunately, we ignore them for reasons that are never convincing, even though they require only a person who knows their value. When we give every matter its true proportion, we do not allow a minor disappointing detail to steal our entire day, nor do we allow anyone, regardless of their stature, to spoil the beauty of life with all its wonderful surroundings. Life is wasted not only when we fail to achieve our dreams, but also when we forget to enjoy what we have achieved. We often repeat that life is short, but the problem is not the brevity of life; rather, we squander it without enjoying it as we should. Indeed, we cannot add a single day to our lifespan, but we certainly can add something of life to our days, even if it is a little. Iqbal Al-Ahmad
